Harana: Serenading a Filipina Woman

Uso pa ba ang harana? I know there is no need for us to ask this question. We are now living in a modern world and most people would say that harana is out of date or 'baduy'. Harana was our traditional form of courtship wherein man serenade woman underneath her window at night. This long-forgotten tradition of courtship is no longer exist even in rural areas and small town of our country.

Today, many of Filipina women won't deny that they find it romantic when a guy serenade them. They find it sweet and romantic than love quotes in text messages and emails of today's generation. If women like it, why harana died and forgotten by many modern Filipinos?

Even before the rise of many technologies, harana started to fade and die. After the Spanish Era in the Philippines, courtship is mostly done without serenading. Although a man has to visit the girl's family and formally introduce himself to the parents of the girl, he can do this without serenading the woman. After a years when technology evolved and when technology made it easier to court and express feelings to a woman, it totally killed this tradition. Now, that the old harana tradition is dead and forgotten, how can we serenade Filipina during this modern times?

Yes Harana is dead and forgotten, but the passion of Filipino in expressing his love is unalterable. The spirit of harana can be done today in a modern form. Sometimes harana is done by live band or radio playing requested songs that is dedicated for a certain woman, sometimes it is done by serenading a woman through videoke machine in front of some friends, and sometimes by serenading a woman through a modern technology (it might be cellphone or internet). It is changed but it didn't lose its purpose to make the woman feels that she's the most beautiful girl in this world. It is really different from old fashioned harana but it never fails to impress the woman. That's how to serenade a Filipina woman... the harana of modern times.
