How to Use Home Internet While At Work

There are so many public proxies nowadays. Sometimes we used these proxy sites or proxy servers to  bypass surfing restrictions just to access blocked websites and restricted services while at work or at school. Some of these proxy servers do not work well, it will just give us a very slow internet connection.

It is time to end all these sufferings. We do not need to endure the slow internet connection if we can make our own computer system to act as our proxy server. In this tutorial I am going to show how to use your internet from home to access blocked websites or networking sites while at work or some other places, most especially if these services are blocked by their firewall.

Here are what we need:
1. PuTTY application.
2. Firefox Web Browser.
3. SSH access to your computer at home ( preferably  LINUX system)

Procedures:
At Home,
1. Setup your own LINUX system at Home.
2. Install/configure your SSH server in your LINUX system.
At Work,
1Install Putty SSH application in your system.
2. Access your SSH server by using PuTTY application.

3. In the left-hand menu, click on SSH. In Protocol options, tick “enable compression” and set your preferred SSH version to “2“.

4. Now expand the “SSH” menu and select the “Tunnels” sub-menu. In the “Source port” field, type in a source port. Here still I am using 22 but you can use anything. Then select “Dynamic” as “Destination” and click the “Add” button.

5. Now, go back to the “Session” tab at the top of the menu, tick on the new connection name (My SSH Proxy) and click on the “Save” button. Now, you are done with PuTTY configuration you can now login to your SSH server.

6. In your Firefox browser setup your proxy server. Go to Tools > Options, then click the Advanced icon  and select the Network tab then click on the Settings. On this dialog click the Manual proxy configuration  button, then put the address 127.0.0.1 in the SOCKS Host field. In the Port field enter the port you used when configuring your SSH tunnel with Putty.

You can now browse internet using your Firefox browser. You can visit www.whatismyip.com to check which IP address firefox is showing.
